The Words of the Pure

Proverbs 15:26 The thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the LORD: but the words of the pure are pleasant words.

INTRODUCTORY THOUGHTS

“Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh” (Matthew 12:34). As such, the words that proceed from our mouths provide helpful insights into the condition of our hearts. A man can only deceive with his words for so long; eventually, his speech exposes the reality of his heart's condition. The Bible reinforces this truth when it says, “the words of the pure are pleasant words” (Proverbs 15:26). The Bible also identifies words of praise to God as “pleasant” words (Psalm 135:3; Psalm 147:1). Impure words manifest an unpleasantness. Whereas, a pure heart utters pure words and speaks of the Lord and of His goodness.

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS

• (For children): The Lord wants us to use pleasant words in speaking to others. Pleasant words are sweet and kind. Read Proverbs 16:24 out loud. These types of words make others feel better inside.

• (For everyone): What kind of words frequently come out of your mouth? Are you surprised by the nature of your language? Do you use profane or vulgar language? Does your language sound similar to the world?

• Name some instances that qualify as pleasant words. Are those the kind of words that come from your lips? Do you praise the Lord, quote His word, and edify the saints with your words? If not, you may be dealing with an unclean heart.

PRAYER THOUGHTS

• Ask the Lord to give you pleasant words to speak to others.

• Ask the Lord to help you realize when your words are unclean.
