David's Pursuit of God

Psalm 63:1-9

I. ARGUMENTS AGAINST DAVID’S PURSUIT

A. His Decisions (2 Samuel 11:27)

1. He pursued Bath-sheba in spite of his knowledge that she belonged to another man (2 Samuel 11:3-4).
2. When he learned that Bath-sheba was with child, he devised a plan whereby he might deceive Uriah into lying with his wife and assuming the child to be his own (2 Samuel 11:5-13).
3. When Uriah’s loyalty to his fellowsoldiers, his country, and his king proved to be too strong, David sent a letter plotting Uriah’s death and David was brazen enough to have Uriah deliver the letter (2 Samuel 11:14-15).
4. When Uriah died, along with other servants of David, David showed no remorse and took Bath-sheba to wife (2 Samuel 11:16-27).

B. His Empathy (2 Samuel 12:1-14)

1. He seemingly experienced no conviction until Nathan the prophet came to him (2 Samuel 12:1).
2. He could not understand his guilt until confronted by sin in the life of another (2 Samuel 12:1-14).

C. His Consequences

1. The death of the newborn (2 Samuel 12:15-24)
2. The defilement of Tamar (2 Samuel 13:1-19)

2. The explanation of his seeking (Psalm 63:1)
a. My soul thirsteth for thee.
b. My flesh longeth for thee.
