Are You Ashamed?

2 Timothy 1:1-18

INTRODUCTION: The average Christian has no idea just how ashamed he is concerning his faith in Christ and system of beliefs. The apostle Paul understood this dilemma, especially as his time on earth was coming to its conclusion. What may have been exciting or popular at one point in time had become a point of offence over time.

I. PAUL’S EARLY ASSESSMENT OF SHAME

A. The Shame of the Past Life (Romans 6:21)

1. When we were servants of sin (Romans 6:20).
2. When we were free from righteousness (Romans 6:20).
3. The fruit was shameful (Romans 6:21).

B. The Lack of Shame in Salvation (Romans 9:33; Romans 10:11)

1. The recipient of our faith is “a stumblingstone and rock of offence” (Romans 9:33).
2. Those who believe “on him shall not be ashamed” (Romans 10:11).

C. The Lack of Shame in the New Life (Romans 1:16)

II. PAUL’S MINISTERIAL ASSESSMENT OF SHAME

A. The Shaming of Rebels (2 Thessalonians 3:14)

1. If any man obey not our word
2. Note that man
3. Have no company with him
4. That he may be ashamed

B. The Zeal for No Shame (Philippians 1:20)

1. The zeal described—“According to my earnest expectation and my hope”
2. The extent described—“that in nothing I shall be ashamed”
3. The hope described—“Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death”

III. PAUL’S CONFRONTATION OF SHAME

A. Concerning Timothy (2 Timothy 1:8, 13)

1. The potential shame (2 Timothy 1:8)
a. Of the testimony of our Lord
b. Of me His prisoner
2. The temptations of shame (2 Timothy 1:8, 13)
a. To avoid partaking of the afflictions of the gospel (2 Timothy 1:8)
b. To relinquish the form of sound words (2 Timothy 1:13)

B. His Own Stedfastness (2 Timothy 1:12)

1. His appointment (2 Timothy 1:11)
a. A preacher
b. An apostle
c. A teacher of the Gentiles
2. His suffering (2 Timothy 1:12)
3. His assurance (2 Timothy 1:12)
a. I know whom I have believed
b. I am persuaded He is able to keep that which I have committed unto Him

C. The Present Divide (2 Timothy 1:15-17)

1. The knowledge of the divide—“This thou knowest” (2 Timothy 1:15)
2. The turning away (2 Timothy 1:15)
a. Their numbers—“all they which are in Asia be turned away from me”
b. Their leaders
1.) Phygellus
2.) Hermogenes
3. The faithful few (2 Timothy 1:16-17)
a. The statement of boldness (2 Timothy 1:16)
1.) Onesiphorus oft refreshed me.
2.) He was not ashamed of my chain.
b. The act of boldness (2 Timothy 1:17)
1.) He sought me out.
2.) He found me.
3.) Paul was a prisoner!!!

CONCLUSION: Are you ashamed of your Bible? Are you ashamed of your Saviour? Are you ashamed of your faith? Are you ashamed of your church and preacher?
