How Can I Please God?

Matthew 3:17; Matthew 17:5

INTRODUCTION: The modern Christian is more concerned with the pleasures of the world than he is whether or not his life pleases God (2 Timothy 3:4). Surely that is not descriptive of any of us in the room.

I. THE EMPHASIS OF CHRIST

A. The Testimony of His Father

1. At His baptism
a. “And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” (Matthew 3:17)
b. “And there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” (Mark 1:11)
c. “And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.” (Luke 3:22)
2. At His transfiguration
a. “While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.” (Matthew 17:5)
b. “And there was a cloud that overshadowed them: and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.” (Mark 9:7)
c. “And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.” (Luke 9:35)

B. The Testimony of the Son (John 8:29)

C. The Testimony of Prophecy (Isaiah 53:10)

II. THE DESIRE OF MAN (Revelation 4:11)

A. The Dilemma of Man (Romans 8:8)

B. The Solution for Man (Ephesians 1:6)

1. When we believe on the finished work of the Lord Jesus Christ, we are accepted in the beloved.
2. It is only then that we can begin to please the Creator.

C. The Opportunities After Salvation

1. He works in your will and obedience to perform His good pleasure (Philippians 2:13).
2. You can walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing (Colossians 1:10; 1 Thessalonians 4:1).
3. Refuse to entangle yourself with the affairs of this life (2 Timothy 2:4).
4. Without faith it is impossible to please Him (Hebrews 11:6).
5. Doing His will (Hebrews 13:21; 1 John 3:22; see John 8:29)

CONCLUSION: Does your life please God? If not, why?
