I Remember When
Job 29
INTRODUCTION: Chapter 29 is a continuation of what Job began in chapter 26. We find this speech two times called a “parable” (Job 27:1; Job 29:1). This should prepare us for some figurative speech, which can in turn be used to teach some powerful truths. Job begins chapter 29 by reminiscing about earlier days when things were apparently better than the present days. We, like Job, have some times that we could look back on and say, “I remember when."
I. I REMEMBER WHEN FELLOWSHIP WAS SWEET (Job 29:2-6)
A. When There Was A Real Sense Of God’s Working (Job 29:2)
B. When I Received Light From God (Job 29:3)
C. When His Light Was My Guide (Job 29:3)
D. When He Was My Help In Every Facet (Job 29:4-6)
1. Health (Job 29:4)
2. Family (Job 29:5)
3. Prosperity – Plenty of butter and oil (Job 29:6)
II. I REMEMBER WHEN I HAD THE RESPECT OF OTHERS (Job 29:7-11)
A. When I Sat In The Gate (Job 29:7)
B. When the Young and Old Respected Me (Job 29:8)
C. When the Noble Listened to Me (Job 29:10-11)
III. I REMEMBER WHEN I MADE A DIFFERENCE (Job 29:12-17)
A. When I Helped the Helpless (Job 29:12)
B. When I Comforted the Troubled (Job 29:13)
C. When Godliness was Important (Job 29:14)
D. When I was Strength for the Weak (Job 29:15-16a)
E. When I Studied to Know the Truth (Job 29:16)
F. When I Fought for Righteousness (Job 29:17)
IV. I REMEMBER WHEN I HAD THE BLESSINGS OF GOD (Job 29:18-25)
A. When My Life was Bountifully Blessed (Job 29:18)
B. When I was Strong (Job 29:19)
C. When the Power of God Rested on Me (Job 29:20-25)
CONCLUSION: Do you remember days when you were closer to God? Do you remember days when the fellowship was sweet and His word was your delight? Do you remember a day when the things of God meant more to you than the things of this world? What happened? Has God done something that would warrant your departure from Him? What will you do to come back to Him and renew your closeness to Him?
