Loss, Now or Later?

1 Corinthians 3:15; Philippians 3:7-8

INTRODUCTION: Sometimes Bible truths cross dispensational lines. One such truth involves the fact that man will make sacrifices, one way or the other—these sacrifices will either come now or they will come later. This principle can be seen in verses such as Matthew 10:39; Matthew 16:25-26; Mark 8:35-36; Luke 9:24-25; Luke 17:33; John 12:25.

I. LOSS ON EARTH (Philippians 3:7-8)

A. The Nature of the Loss

1. In general, man would view these losses as costing one greatly (Philippians 3:7).
a. An Hebrew of the Hebrews (Philippians 3:5)

2.) Of the stock of Israel
3.) Of the tribe of Benjamin
b. As touching the law, a Pharisee (Philippians 3:5)
c. Concerning zeal, persecuting the church (Philippians 3:6)
d. Touching the righteousness which is in the law, blameless (Philippians 3:6)
2. Initially, the perception would be the same by a saved person—“what things were gain to me” (Philippians 3:7).

B. The Duration of the Loss—in this life

C. The Replacement of the Loss

1. Christ (Philippians 3:7)
2. The excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord (Philippians 3:8)
3. That I may win Christ (Philippians 3:8)

II. LOSS IN HEAVEN (1 Corinthians 3:15)

A. The Nature of the Loss

1. It is a reward given by God for the benefit of man (1 Corinthians 3:14).
2. The reward serves as a declaration of man’s work (1 Corinthians 3:13).

B. The Duration of the Loss

1. Loss refused in the temporary yields loss in eternity (1 Corinthians 3:15).
2. This will likely manifest itself both in
a. The millennial kingdom
b. And in eternity future

C. The Replacement of the Loss—no replacement

CONCLUSION: Each one of us here needs to make up our minds. We are going to have to make some sacrifices, the only question is will you make them now or in eternity. The choice is yours!
