So Much the More
Hebrews 10:19-25
INTRODUCTION: The path of the world and intended path of the saved could not be any more diametrically opposed. While “evil men and seducers…wax worse and worse” (2 Timothy 3:13), “the path of the just” should be shining “more and more unto the perfect day” (Proverbs 4:18).
I. THE DIRECTION OF THE WORLD
A. As Seen in Pharaoh—“he sinned yet more, and hardened his heart” (Exodus 9:34)
B. As Seen in the Wilderness—“they sinned yet more against him by provoking the most High in the wilderness” (Psalm 78:17)
C. As Seen in Ahaz—“in the time of his distress did he trespass yet more against the LORD” (2 Chronicles 28:22)
D. As Seen in Amon—“but Amon trespassed more and more” (2 Chronicles 33:23)
E. As Seen in the Nation of Israel—“Why should ye be stricken any more? ye will revolt more and more” (Isaiah 1:5)
F. As Seen in the Tribulation—“because iniquity shall abound” (Matthew 24:12)
II. THE DESIRED DIRECTION OF THE SAINTS
A. As Seen in the Psalmist—“I…will yet praise thee more and more” (Psalm 71:14)
B. As Seen in the Wisdom of Solomon—“the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day” (Proverbs 4:18)
C. As Seen in the Expressed Desire for the Church
1. “Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope” (Romans 15:13)
2. “Be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord” (1 Corinthians 15:58)
3. “As ye abound…in faith, and utterance, and knowledge, and in all diligence, and in your love to us” (2 Corinthians 8:7)
4. “That ye…may abound to every good work” (2 Corinthians 9:8)
5. “This I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment” (Philippians 1:9)
6. “That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing…increasing in the knowledge of God” (Colossians 1:10)
7. “And the Lord make you to increase and abound in love one toward another” (1 Thessalonians 3:12)
8. “We beseech you…that as ye have received of us how ye ought to walk and to please God, so ye would abound more and more” (1 Thessalonians 4:1)
9. “We are bound to thank God always for you…because that your faith growth exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you all toward each other aboundeth” (2 Thessalonians 1:3)
10. “Exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching” (Hebrews 10:25)
III. THE DETERMINING FACTOR (Hebrews 10:25)
CONCLUSION: When training for marathon running, runners often implement progressive runs. By that, I mean they run a normal pace until the last few minutes of the run where they go full speed. In many ways, the saint should hit a dead sprint as he sees the Lord’s return approaching.
